KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Two people have been charged in connection with Monday’s shooting death of a Hispanic man. Friends say they appreciate the efforts of good Samaritans who tried to save the life of Joel Solis, when they found him.
Ladarrious White, 24, and Kimberly Winn, 25, each have been charged with first-degree murder, attempted aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
Friends say the victim worked hard as a horse groomer to provide for two young daughters.
“He was a very good person,” said Nancy Noriega, one of Solis’ friends. “He just wanted to make everybody laugh. He jokes for anything. I don’t think he has any enemies. He likes to party all the time.”
Witnesses heard shots early on Monday and discovered Solis behind the wheel of his car near 18th and Oakland. The neighbors got him out of the vehicle and performed CPR on Solis until paramedics arrived.
“I just want to thank those people,” said Carlos Sanchez, a friend. “They went out of their way to help my friend in his last moments. It’s good to hear there are good people out there trying to help.”
Sanchez says Solis liked to be called Leo, and lived with a girlfriend in Shawnee. Friends say Leo told them that if anything ever happened to him, he wanted to buried with his parents in his hometown in Mexico.
Friends do not know either of the suspects. One of them, White, also is accused of being the shooter, charged with criminal discharge of a firearm into a vehicle.
Bond for both suspects is set at $750,000 each.
