KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Northland woman says she was sick of trying to explain to people what she went through every day with her mailman, so she decided to record it.
We’ve seen the videos, people who are supposed to be making special deliveries tossing precious cargo, or even urinating on the driveway. Susan Howard Perry said she saw something similar all the time from her window – with her mailman. Knowing she had an expensive book on its way, she decided to record the drop off.
“I thought – I’m gonna see what he does with this book – and sure enough, that’s how the video happened,” she explained.
Narrating from her window, Susan saw her mailman throwing that expensive book onto the ground. And she felt relief that she finally had proof.
“I thought – if I were to tell somebody this, they’re gonna look at me like, really? Come on, you’re exaggerating. No I’m not, that’s how my mail gets delivered,” she said.
Susan says for years she’s dealt with issues, certified mail not delivered, even when she was home to sign for it, or packages on the ground by the street and destroyed letters.
“He would put the mail in, and then shove the package in, which would just tear up all the mail,” she said. “That’s all I did was spend my time filing complaints, and nothing got resolved.”
So when she posted the video on Facebook, she was at least relieved to get support, but she didn’t realize she’d get an answer in the form of a visit from the new manager of her post office.
“He showed up at my front door, and literally his boss had seen the video on Facebook, and he said, ‘I apologize,’” she explained.
Now Susan feels she’s at least a step closer to getting what she’s wanted all along, her mail.
“That’s all I want! I want my mail!” she exclaimed.
Stacy St. John from the U.S. Postal Service released a statement regarding the incident that reads:
“The Postal Service condemns, in the strongest possible sense, the actions of any employee who mishandles mail or packages. An investigation into the incident is underway and if this video is accurate, then the behavior on the part of the employee shown in the video is not only unacceptable to the Postal Service, it threatens to tarnish the reputation and high level of trust that the vast majority of our employees work so hard to uphold. We have reached out to the customer to apologize and want to assure the public that we take such incidents seriously and are taking all appropriate steps to address it and ensure it does not happen again.”
