GARDNER, Kan. -- As National Read Across America Week kicked off, one area teacher decided to get his students in the spirit with two things he loves: Dr. Suess and the Kansas City Royals.

At Nike Elementary in Gardner, Kan., rewrote Dr. Suess's classic Green Eggs and Ham with a Royals spin. He titled it Green Slushes and Grand Slams.

His students got to act out the reading in the school gym, complete with bases, base runners, and fans in the stands.

"It's a fun way to get them engaged, kind of see how the community all comes together, rallies around a team or something else, you know, and gets them involved as citizens," Mark Hinojosa said. "Sports is one way that we can do that. There's all kinds of other ways, but I'm a big Royals fan, so I gotta put them in there somewhere."
