KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A large sink hole near 9th & Bellefontaine caused some to go without running water for nearly 15 hours. Although the water is back on, the sink hole remains — and will for at least two more days.

The sink hole occurred between 3 and 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the water department. Water from a water main break washed away the earth from underneath, causing the sink hole.

Although the water department tries to monitor lines with underground cameras, sinkholes can still occur — without warning.

Crews will continue to work to repair the sinkhole. In the meantime, barricades will block access to a portion of Bellefontaine near 9th Street.
