INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A car barreled into a group of teenagers and then drove off on 24 Highway near Noland Road on Sunday.
The group of teens was leaving 7-Eleven after buying snacks. They were walking along 24 Highway in a grassy area when two of them were hit.
The group says the piercing noise was the last thing they heard.
“Gary gets laid down by a car and then my friend Griffin gets laid down by a car!” said Aaron Upton, one of the friends.
“It whacks Gary in the back of the ankle and he does a little pirouette his glasses fly off and I see Griffin go on the hood of the car, and then kind of get launched forward,” said Upton.
The group of friends want the driver who hit his buddies to turn himself in.
“Just be an adult about it, man. Step forward. No one got hurt. Just be an adult about it,” said Seth Rhoades.
Gary Fortman says he walked away with just a bruise on his leg but knows it could have been much worse.
“I could have ended up breaking or losing a leg and Griffin might not be with us anymore which is a very scary thought,” said Fortman. “I thought he was gone, frankly. I genuinely thought he was gone.”
The teens say they think the car that hit them was a grey or silver Mustang. Witnesses report it had temporary license plates. If you have any information, please call the Independence Police Department.
