KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Gym-goers, ready to sweat out some holiday-time feasts felt "Grinched" when they realized the gym that was supposed to be open was closed and empty.
Active Family Fitness near Barry Road and North Oak Trafficway, which had been open for several years, suddenly closed. Members and employees say they had no idea it was coming.
It happened in the middle of December. According to several angry posts on the Active Family Fitness Facebook page, members showed up ready for a daily workout and the place was closed and cleared out.
Some even say employees weren't notified, they found out the same way everyone else did.
Meredith Tucker said when she showed up there was only a simple note on the door telling people to call Texas Family Fitness the company that owns Active Family Fitness.
Friday, however, there's a more thorough explanation on the window- claiming it was a landlord dispute that caused the gym to close. Impact Fitness's general manager says the gym is taking all the members from Active Family and allowing them to work out there for the same price. He says he was just as surprised as everyone else to find out Active Family Fitness was closing.
"It was just the right thing to do, to give people that you work with, your kids go to school with, you see out and about all the time, at least some answers somewhere that they can come," said Jeff Rosson.
Impact Fitness was also able to give many employees from Active Family Fitness a job. FOX 4 reached out to Texas Family Fitness- the company that owns Active Family Fitness- and were told it was unlikely anyone would want to speak about the issue.
However, the note on the door apologized for the inconvenience and thanked the community for its support.
