INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- One woman is dead and a man is in custody after a shooting Saturday afternoon at a house on South Norton Avenue.

Local law enforcement officials have not released the names of those involved in the incident.

Police responded to a house on S. Norton around 12:10 p.m. after a call about a shooting in the neighborhood.

They say a woman living at the house was shot and transported to the hospital, where she later died.

Police said they took a man who also lives at home into custody without incident.

Neighbor Sylvia Taylor said the two people involved in the violence were a couple. She said they couldn't afford their bills anymore, and they told her they were supposed to be out of the home by Feb. 14.  Taylor said the couple was going through a lot of stress due to their financial problems.

Taylor recalled the couple argued often, but were good neighbors and lived at the house for about a decade.

She says it will be different without them, especially the woman who died.

"I mean it would be for me.  I don't know about everybody else, but I'm used to waving at them and talking to her and she didn't really have a lot of friends," Taylor said.

Taylor says the couple didn't have any children living here with them, but had many pets that were taken away Saturday afternoon.

The Independence Police Department asks if anyone has information about the shooting to please call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-8477 or the police department at (816) 836-3600.
