INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A couple in their 60’s has been found dead in their Independence home. The police investigation is now leaning towards an apparent murder-suicide. The bodies were found in a home near 8th Street and South Ash Avenue on Wednesday evening.

There’s a lot of shock and sadness in this neighborhood right now. Investigators say just before 6 p.m., Independence police received a 911 call regarding a domestic violence disturbance involving a gun. Police say the call came from someone who lived inside the home on S. Ash Ave.

Police officers arrived and found 66-year-old Phillip Hurlburt and his 66-year-old wife, Barbara Olsen, both shot to death. According to Jackson County records, the couple had been married for 17 years. Police say from a front window that one of the bodies could be seen lying on a floor.

Investigators haven’t identified the shooter or said anything else about Hurlburt and Olsen. FOX 4 will continue to follow developments with this story.
