INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Gunfire rang out Monday afternoon in Independence, leaving one person hospitalized and another on the run. The shooting happened in the area of 40 Highway and Willow.

Neighbors told FOX 4's Sean McDowell that they see and hear fights all the time along that block of 40 Highway, and, according to people who live there, some of it comes from the rental cabins behind Russ' Performance Corner auto shop. Independence Police say it was after 12:30 on Monday when shots rang out, and one man ran from police.

Officers say some kind of argument took place -- and one man was shot by that fugitive. Independence police officers searched high and low for that suspect -- while the man who was shot was treated at a hospital.

"We're fairly confident we've been talking to several witnesses of the shooting," Officer John Syme said.

Officer Syme tells FOX 4 news that detectives are still searching for the shooter. He says police have been too busy with recent shootings in the metro.

"We seem to have an increase in shootings in the area. Both here and in Kansas City and in the area during the last several weeks. It's difficult We have a lot of resources on the ground, but it's pretty taxing," he said.

Officer Syme says the public hasn't been as willing to help the police with recent shootings. He hopes that will change. If you know anything about this shooting -- or the man detectives are searching for -- please call Independence Police.
