FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Former Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences president and civic leader Karen Pletz, whose exit from the school was marked with criminal allegations, was found dead in a Florida home early Tuesday morning, police said.

Pletz, 64, led the school from 1995 until she was fired in December of 2009. She had been facing federal indictment on 24 charges of misappropriating over $1.5 million her tenure.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police, officers responding to an "unknown death" call found her dead at the home around 12:15 a.m.

Police say that her death is still under investigation, but that there were no immediate signs of foul play.

On Tuesday, the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences released the following statement:

"Our University community is saddened to learn of the death of the University's former president, Karen Pletz. Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this time of profound loss."
