KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The suspect in a deadly shooting on Kansas City’s northeast side is now in jail, charged with second-degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child.

Derrick Williams, 31, of Kansas City, Kan., is accused of shooting a mother inside an apartment in the Pendleton Heights subdivision near Independence Avenue and Wabash early Thursday morning. Three children were inside when the shooting happened. One told an officer, “He killed my mom.”

A child also told police that Williams put a gun in the child’s mouth and hit another in the head.

Prosecutors have requested a bond of $300,000.
