KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police are investigating a double shooting that killed two men on Kansas City’s eastside.

Officers responded to a call about a shooting at East 28th and Prospect Avenue shortly after 1 p.m. The shooting scene is near the department’s East Patrol Campus.

Officers found two men suffering from gunshot injuries. Investigators said the men died before EMS arrived to transport them to hospitals. The names of the two victims have not been released.

Prospect from 27th Street on the north side to about three blocks to the south was closed for several hours while police investigated Tuesday.

Detectives said that two people ran from the intersection before police arrived.

Officers found those two people several blocks away and are questioning them, but detectives don’t know if they are involved in the shooting at this time. KCPD Sgt. Jake Becchina said the two people who’ve been detained have not been arrested yet.

Since KCPD came, a number of people came to the scene wondering what happened. Becchina said detectives are trying to protect the integrity of the crime scene, and that’s a big part of their focus.

“They’re balancing that with the individuals that are here at the scene because they have concerns that it involves a family member, and that’s obviously a super emotional time to work through right now,” he said.

Becchina said their detectives are experienced in these situations.

“In every one of these cases, the detectives feel for family members in situations like this,” Becchina said. “Many of these detectives have done this for years, and they’ve seen this many many many times unfortunately.”
