KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Pokemon Go players are apparently attracting more than just Pokemon.

According to Kansas City, Mo., police, five players have been robbed since the popular game began. It’s often because those Pokemon seekers aren’t paying attention to their surroundings.

KCPD officers say they’re aware of five recent robberies where the victims were approached while playing the game on their mobile phones.

Police spokeswoman Stacey Graves says it’s a crime of opportunity.

In all five of those cases — people were followed while staring into their phones — rather than taking stock of their surroundings.

Sergeant Graves says each time the victims were robbed in the evening hours by young men carrying guns — typically, after making conversation with the Pokemon players.

“The suspects might have made them feel at ease. They said, ‘Hey, what are you playing?’ or ‘are you playing Pokemon Go? What level are you on?’ At that time, that’s when the suspects commit the armed robbery,” she said.
