KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two days after a car hit an 11-year-old girl, police released pictures of the car involved in the crash.
The images came from a security camera at a business near the crash site on Prospect Avenue.
Police are looking for a 2015 to 2018 silver Cadillac ATS. The car is described as a newer model, 4-door vehicle with silver rims and a sun roof.
Detectives said the driver of the car hit the 11-year-old girl around 11:30 p.m. on July 4. The girl was in the street, lighting fireworks at the time.
“She was bending down like this to light. That’s when the car came. They just hit her. They hit her. She like instantly went up. She did like three flips then she flew and landed like 30 feet,” said Champayne Henderson, 11-year-old Zynajsia’s mom.
Her family told officers the driver of the car never stopped to check on the girl.
The 11-year-old is hospitalized with serious injuries and had at least one surgery Tuesday. The moment still feels all too real for Henderson.
“Nae, I’m here. I’m here,” she said. “And she’s like, ‘Mommy, am I dying? Am I dying?'”
Now this family is focused on healing, but they’re doing so while in the pursuit of justice.
“If you know you didn’t hit a person, you know you hit something. My daughter, her whole life is about to change. Her walking may not ever be the same,” Henderson said.
Even though the crash could have stolen this little girl’s joy, she’s the most optimistic about what the future will bring.
“She’s thinking positive about it: ‘Mama, I’m going to walk again. I know I’m going to dance again,'” Henderson said.
Doctors have told the family it could be three months before she walks again, but to say Zynajsia is determined would be an understatement.
“She’s a bright, beautiful personality, bigger than the world. That’s my baby that keeps me on my toes,” Henderson said.
This little dancer who made others smile just won’t give up.
“Please keep her in your prayers, but she don’t want anybody to be sad,” her mom said.
Police said the car likely has damage to the front right side. If you’ve seen the car, or know someone who owns one that matches the description police provided, call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
