KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City woman used a sledgehammer to free a 7-month-old baby from a locked vehicle Wednesday.

Police say the incident happened at a home in the 10200 block of NW 72nd Street, which is near I-29 and Barry Road.

According to police, the mom accidentally locked the keys and the 7-month-old inside the car.

The car was still cool but started to heat up pretty quickly, police say. The baby’s mom and her sister decided to try to break into the car instead of waiting for first responders, but that didn’t work. The woman’s sister then decided to use a 20-pound sledgehammer to break the window.

The women were able to free the baby prior to first responders arriving.

The 7-month-old was taken to the hospital as a precaution but appears to be fine.
