KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Prosecutors say the case of a KCK man accused of trying to sell a girl, 2, online for sex was even worse than the original charges.
Zachary Garrett pleaded guilty Wednesday to raping and sodomizing that child to get her ready for others.
Prosecutors say Garrett, 22, thought he was arranging a sexual encounter between the 2-year-old and someone in Missouri. But he was really talking to Homeland Security agents.
Garrett put up the ad on Craigslist, and later arranged for them to come to his Kansas City, Kansas home. Prosecutors say in both recorded phone calls and text messages he revealed details about how he raped and sodomized the girl.
When the undercover Homeland Security agents arrived, he handed them a bottle of lube and directed them to the girl who was sitting on her bed holding a baby doll and a book, wearing just a diaper, and he was promptly arrested.
“Animals like that are unbelievable, and that’s what they are they are animals they aren’t human beings. I don’t consider that guy to be a human being, he’s less than that,” neighbor Carl Conde said.
Because of the deal being arranged across state lines, prosecutors explained in court Garrett has a pending federal indictment on those same charges. But the feds agreed to drop their case, as long as he pleaded guilty in state court and is sentenced to at least 25 years in state prison.
Garrett took the deal that would also require him to register as a sex offender and serve at least 20 years of any sentence. Sentencing is set for December 2nd at 11:30 a.m.
