KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Officers with the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department are investigating after a child was killed in a shooting Wednesday night.

The shooting was reported around 6:15 p.m. near N. 31st Street and Greeley Avenue, just north of Parallel Parkway. Police tell FOX4 the victim was outside playing when someone shot him.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where they later died from their injuries.

Jeannie Henslee’s grandson was in the neighborhood playing with other children when she heard the shots.

“It was so lout it sounded like a boom every time he shot,” she said. “I dropped to the ground because I thought maybe they were shooting at our house and I asked where my grandson was because he was up there when it happened so I was scared to death. Scared something got him.”

Detectives are on scene investigating what may have led up to the incident.

Detectives are asking the public to be on the lookout for the below pictured vehicle that is believed to have been involved in the shooting. It appears to be a mid-2000’s maroon Subaru Legacy missing the front bumper with a possible Kansas tag.

“It’s sad every time it happens but as you can tell, the neighborhood is out, it’s hard for everybody. We are working very hard to solve,” KCK Police Major Violeta Magee said.

Neighbors are left asking why.

“He shouldn’t have been in the crossfire this hits home my heart breaks for them,” Jessica Henslee said.

“These kids loved him like they were brothers. It was unreal. I just can’t believe this happened to a little boy in our neighborhood,” Jeanine Henslee said.
