KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Tanya Beck just wants her gun back. But the Wyandotte County resident says that even though a judge dismissed a gun case against her a month ago, Kansas City Kansas Police still won’t return her gun to her.

Police say that prosecutors are to blame, but prosecutors say that they didn’t know anything about it until FOX 4 gave them a call.

Beck was charged in August after she admitted firing her gun at a would-be intruder in her backyard. The intruder fled and was never caught, but Beck was ticketed by police for illegaly discharging a weapon inside city limits.

Both sides agreed that Beck was acting in self-defense, and the charges were thrown out by a Wyandotte County judge on August 20th. Beck should have been able to get her gun back from the police evidence locker, but instead she says that authorities have just given her the run-around.

“This is very frustrating because there have been several attempts to try and get property that should not have been taken away from me in the begining,” said Beck, who says that she was given the gun by her late father.

On Thursday, she was told that she needed to provide paperwork proving that she received the gun from her father.

“I had advised her that the person was deceased and it’s been over 20 years, and how was I going to obtain that,” said Beck.

KCK Police told FOX 4 that even though they have the gun, it’s up to the city prosecutor’s office to release it back to Beck. But prosecutors told FOX 4 that they didn’t know anything about the case.

Prosecutors say that Beck should be able to get her gun back on Friday, provided that she passes a federal background check. Prosecutors couldn’t say who dropped the ball in the case, but Beck says that she’s glad to be able to protect herself again.
