KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Students at Wyandotte High School were placed on lockdown after a weapon was found on campus.
According to Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools, the weapon was confiscated and two students are in custody.
The district said another student alerted a staff member about the suspect bringing the gun to school. The suspected student was questioned and ran off, but was found off campus.
Students were given the option to leave early or stay for the rest of the school day.
The district confirmed that no one was harmed in the incident and parents can check their students out by following normal procedures if they choose.
“Nobody got hurt, but like it happened already is it going to happen again?” Wyandotte High School mom Sonia Cabrera said.
That’s what some parents were thinking after an incident at the school.
“Everything that’s been going on like all the shootings and killing kids like I started praying right away,” Cabrera said. “The first question I asked like, ‘What happened to the metal detectors?’ Their response was like there’s too many doors. So there’s too many doors — they should have too many metal detectors on each door.”
That’s a question police are trying to answer as they investigate.
The fear and anxiety was felt from some students too as many waited while their parents stood in line to pick them up.
“We thought it was a practice,” student Edgar Vargas said.
The district said someone told a staff member the student had a gun and in response the school went on lockdown, but Vargas said at first students thought it was a drill until they got an email.
Police are investigating how the student was able to take the gun onto campus.
FOX4 was there when another student was detained by police. Investigators said he’s being questioned.
The first day of school for Wyandotte High School was Monday.
