KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former bowling alley is in the process of getting a makeover as a charter school recently purchased the old King Louie East in Kansas City.
This will be the second King Louie Bowling Alley in the metro to get renovated. Work is currently underway at the King Louie West off Metcalf in Overland Park to bring in the Johnson County Museum and Theater in the Park.
When work is complete at the Kansas City, Mo., location, the building will be home to the Academy for Integrated Arts, a charter school sponsored by UMKC. The Academy for Integrated Arts opened in a small building at 56th and Troost back in 2012, but they are out of space.
School leaders recently sponsored a fundraising campaign and raised $3-million for a new space. They decided it would be more cost-effective to buy an existing building and renovate rather than build brand new. The abandoned King Louie East Lanes, which was built back in 1955, seemed like the perfect fit.
The charter school currently teaches more than 100 children and with this big space, they hope to eventually more than triple their enrollment.
The plan right now is to move into this building this fall – so they will be hard at work this summer, as they work to transform the space from a bowling alley to a school.
