UPDATE: Kansas City police said Monday they believe this shooting was a suicide, not a homicide.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Police Department is investigating a suspicious death in Kansas City’s Northland on Friday.

According to police, officers were called to the 2400 block of N.E. Pence Avenue, just off Antioch and Vivion roads, after a neighbor saw someone lying in a yard that may need help.

On scene, police found the person unresponsive with gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

“We do not know yet if this is a homicide, but we are treating it as a suspicious death, due to circumstances found at the scene,” KCPD spokesperson Capt. Leslie Foreman said via email.

KCPD initially reported the incident as a homicide, but investigators now say the death is suspicious in nature.
