KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Police Department says officers located a 10-year-old boy on Jan. 5, more than six weeks after he disappeared.

Before he turned up, Jayvan Scott was last seen on Nov. 19 near 99th & Richmond Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. wearing an orange shirt, blue shorts, and flip-flops.

Jayvan is 5-foot-3 and weighs 130 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Police say his brother Malachi picked up the 10-year-old, but it’s not known if they left Jayvan’s house in a car or simply walked away.

“What we would hope is if someone saw a 10-year-old kid walking down the sidewalk that that would concern them and they would alert somebody about that,” Kansas City Police Sgt. Jake Becchina said.

Detectives said Malachi’s family in Blue Springs reported the teenager missing and believe he ran away.

Blue Springs police said Malachi was in foster care and set to move somewhere else Wednesday. It’s not clear if Jayvan was in foster care.

Foster care experts said more often than they hope foster kids run away.

“So oftentimes we see teenagers run away and really usually see that those young people are trying to connect with members of their family or extended family in that network,” Lori Ross, The Founder of FosterAdopt Connect said.

“A lot of times young people run away because they have a lot of issues that they’re struggling with when they come into the foster care system and it is uncomfortable.”

Ross said this should be a call to action for the community to get involved.

“As we’re all headed into Thanksgiving, the fact that these young boys have ran away and found their way back to each other via running away, it isn’t surprising but it does paint a picture for all of us I think of how important families are,” Ross said.
