KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Despite the frigid temperatures Tuesday morning, doughnut lovers braved the cold to win free doughnuts for the next year.

Krispy Kreme’s 1000th store opened at 6 a.m. and the first 100 customers in line won a free dozen doughnuts every month for a year.

In addition to winning free doughnuts for a year, everyone who stops by a Krispy Kreme store Tuesday gets a free glazed doughnut.

The newest location is at 76th and State Avenue.

Vernon Rudolph opened the first Krispy Kreme in 1937 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Rudolph began selling to doughnuts to grocery stores, but people loved the smell and asked if they could buy a hot doughnut. Rudolph then cut a hole in the wall and began selling hot glazed doughnuts to those walking along the sidewalk directly outside of the window.
