LAWRENCE, Kan. — Lawrence Police have been at a house in the 600 block of N. Michigan for a significant amount of time on Friday where there’s been a deadly shooting. The victim is a 1-year-old girl, and while emergency crews tried to save their life, the child died a short time after the shooting.

Police were first called to the home just north of the Kansas Turnpike at about 10:30 a.m.

Investigators remain at the scene and are working to figure out exactly what led up to the shooting. Police say this incident is being investigated as an accidental shooting.

“This investigation has been incredibly difficult for everyone involved, but most importantly the family of the child. We ask for everyone to please respect the privacy of the family as they grieve their horrific loss,” Sgt. Amy Rhoads with the Lawrence Police Department said.

Police have not yet released the child’s name.

Neighbors Fox 4 spoke with say a young couple moved into the home about a year and a half ago and have two children. One neighbor says the youngest was a girl, although police are not confirming that information at this time.

“I uh, had met them on occasion, being neighbors but it is a sad thing any time a child dies. I was a clinical pathologist for 28 years and saw a lot of death but children were always the worst. It is really tough,” neighbor John Skuban said.

Another neighbors said they heard banging on the inside of the home Friday morning, but they’re not sure what it was or if it was related to the shooting.

Lawrence police are being very tight-lipped about this incident. Officers on scene will not comment and Fox 4’s calls to the public information officer have not been returned.

When police wrap up their investigation, they will send the information to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office to determine if any charges will be filed.

Police say a one-year-old was shot and killed in Lawrence, Friday.
