LAWRENCE, Kan. — A Sunday evening police shooting in Lawrence left one person dead. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is now investigating.

At about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Lawrence police responded to a home near E. 21st Terrace and Harper Street for a report of criminal damage.

According to the KBI, when Lawrence police arrived, they learned a man was inside, and the homeowner was not present. Officers did not enter the home, the KBI said.

Based on the KBI’s initial investigation, the man eventually exited the home, and police tried to make contact with him. KBI said the man pulled out a gun and pointed it at officers.

Three of the five Lawrence police officers fired, and multiple rounds hit the man.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

The man has been identified as 43-year-old Michael Blanck.

Lawrence Police Department policy requires the KBI to investigate any shooting involving officers. The KBI’s investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the agency’s investigation will be turned over county prosecutors for review.
