INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Police say one man was shot and killed on Friday morning outside a home in the Kerrington Woods neighborhood. Independence police identified the victim as 45-year-old David J. Duncan.
Officers are now searching for a suspect that was seen speeding away in a car. Neighbors reported hearing several gunshots on East 41st Terrace, just after 9:30 a.m. Police say they even heard the gunshots miles away.
Distraught family members quickly arrived on the crime scene to learn that a man had been shot. Police say the shooting happened outside a home near the street. And when officers arrived, they spotted a silver Cadillac speeding away. Police chased the suspect car but lost it. They say it was last seen heading west on 50 Highway near Unity Village.
"Right now we are assuming that the suspect is still armed," said John Syme, of the Independence police. "So we want to be obviously very cautious and if anyone does see the vehicle call the police. We want to be able to get this person."
Police faced a challenge consoling relatives of the victim, who weren't sure what had happened.
Family members left the crime scene to go to the hospital. One woman said her home alarm system notified her that something was wrong.
"On an active scene obviously our first priority is to the victims in the community," Syme said. "Any time we see that it's really heartbreaking. We have to give them the best information we have at the time, console them, but also still do our jobs. If there's a bad guy out there we have to get the bad guy first."
The silver Cadillac XTS police are searching for is a new 2015 model with Missouri license plates HL1 L5H. If you see it you should call police immediately. The driver is believed to be armed and dangerous.
