LIBERTY, Mo. — Authorities in Liberty responded to a call around 5:40 p.m. on Saturday to the 1200 block of Pier Street of a reported stabbing.

Liberty resident Shawn Bonchek, 17, was identified as the victim.  He was transported by ambulance to Liberty Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A male teenager at the scene was arrested.  The suspect was transferred to the custody of Clay County juvenile authorities.

Those who knew Bonchek said he was a junior at Liberty High School who loved music and hanging out with friends.

The stabbing reportedly happened outside the mobile home where the suspect lived with his grandmother. Friends of Bonchek said the two had problems with each other.

Drew Sorrell, a friend of Bonchek, said he just wants people to hold on the good memories.

“I just want them to remember how happy and full of happiness and laughter (he was) all the time. He never really had bad days,” Sorrell said. “He might’ve been down for a little bit, but by the end of the day, we’d cheer him up.”

Bonchek’s friend said he just got a car a few weeks ago and started a new job at a Liberty restaurant. They never expected everything to end so quickly.
