KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police are relieved that the man involved in a brief standoff with them Thursday morning in southeast Kansas City did not take the situation any further than he did, which could have forced police to use deadly force.

The man apparently went on the defensive when some of his belongings inside a storage unit in the 5600 Block of East 112th Terrace were about to be repossessed.

The man, who is in his 30s, backed into the corner of the unit behind a big television. He had a BB gun inside the unit, shut the door and refused to come out.

Kansas City, Mo., police officer Darrin Snapp said thankfully, the suspect did not make any abrupt moves or raise his hand, making police believe he was more dangerously armed.

After less than an hour, the man surrendered and was arrested for outstanding warrants and theft.
