Man in critical condition after shooting, suspect taken into custody

LAWRENCE, Kan. — A man is in critical condition following an early morning shooting Friday according to police.

Officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of Steven Drive just after 12:30 a.m. on reports of a shooting. When officers arrived on scene they found a 27-year-old man who with gunshot wounds. The victim was transported by air ambulance to a Kansas City area trauma center according to police.

Police said the suspect had fled the scene by the time officers arrived.

Police located the suspect after the suspect allegedly stole a vehicle that was left running in the driveway of a home near 25th and Alabama around 7:40. The vehicle’s owner immediately called police.

Police said they spotted the stolen vehicle on East 23rd Street. Police then tried to stop the vehicle. Police said they pursued the vehicle with speeds up to 100 mph. The pursuit ended when the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed near K-10 and Church Street in Eudora.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital to treat non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the crash.

The suspect is a 22-year-old Kansas City, Kan. man. Police said the suspect was staying at the home.
