KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A metro man is going to prison after a girl died after being hit by a stray bullet fired from his gun. Aaron Sullivan fired his gun into the air on July 4, 2011 and one of the bullets accidentally hit 11-year-old Blair Lane.

Lane died a few days after being shot. Sullivan pleaded guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter in December of 2011. In court, Sullivan said that he wasn’t even sure if he was the one who fired the fatal shot, but because the gun was his, he took full responsibility for the incident.

“I caused a little girl’s death and I am sorry,” said Sullivan. “I can’t stress that enough, it was an accident.”

The fact that Sullivan took responsibility for the tragedy meant a lot to Lane’s mother.

A Jackson County judge sentenced Sullivan to three years in prison.
