NEAR PORTLAND, Ore. — An Oregon man was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter for smashing the head of his girlfriend’s four-year-old son.
The incident happened in November 2011 after Gerardo Chavarria admitted to hitting the boy’s head in anger, according to a local newspaper.
Chavarria initially said he was innocent, but changed his plea on Tuesday a few weeks before he was set to go on trial. As part of that plea deal, murder charges were changed to manslaughter.
In addition to the prison sentence, Chavarria will have to pay restitution and legal fees, the Statesmen Journal reported.
During the hearing, Chavarria said the four-year-old boy, Sebastian, “did something” that resulted in having the man’s beer knocked over. “I just got angry and I hit his head against the floor.”
Chavarria admitted there were at least two other instances where he hurt the young boy.
The boy died from head injuries a day after the incident.
