OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – A toddler remains in the hospital Monday night after a car backed over her in an Overland Park apartment complex Sunday afternoon. Police said it happened at The Princeton Court Apartments on West 87th Street.

A man who claims to have been driving the car, who only wants to go by Marcus, told FOX 4 he had no idea the toddler wandered behind his car.

“Originally I thought it was a pothole until I heard her scream,” he said. “The father instinct kicked in I was thinking, this could be my child.”

Police said the little girl’s babysitter lost contact with the toddler and the child ended up behind the car.

“I never screamed like that another day in my life,” Marcus told FOX 4 on Monday. “I still cry whenever I think about it.”

Marcus said he is a father himself, and says he hates that a child was hurt.

“It gets to me because like I said I got two daughters and a boy,” he said.

Police told FOX 4 they are conducting drug and alcohol tests, as they do in any major accident. The test results aren’t in yet, but Marcus said he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the accident happened.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and as of right now, nobody is facing any charges in the accident.
