OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – A middle school student collapsed during a cross country meet and had to be taken to an area hospital.
On Tuesday the Blue Valley School District was holding an inter-district cross country meet for seventh and eighth grade students from nine different middle schools at Johnson County Community College. A 13-year-old male student collapsed during the meet and went into full cardiac arrest, requiring medical attention at the scene. Before paramedics arrived, a bystander began performing CPR on the eight grader from Overland Trail Middle School. He was then transported to an area hospital for treatment.
According to Johnson County MedAct, the student was initially considered code blue, which means he medically died, but was revived at the scene before being taken to the hospital. He remains in critical condition as of Tuesday evening.
