KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Mike Moustakas had the play of the night in Game 3 of the ALCS against the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium. A fly ball by Orioles Adam Jones sent him running toward the dugout suits where he toppled over the rail. Royals fans — quick to act — cushioned his fall.

“It was unbelievable. He just jumped over and we start catching,” Tim Anderson of Overland Park said. “It looked like all of the sudden we were going to let Moose drop, but everybody stood up, and it was like he fell on a bed — a bunch of pillows — because we caught him, helped him back up.”

Another fan said it’s a ballpark experience he’ll never forget.

“He just kind of landed on top of all of us with our arms out,” Mike Talkington of Overland Park said. “He literally never hit the concrete.” It was an experience Talkington said he’d never forget. “That was an experience of a lifetime, you know? I have a major league baseball player fly over the rail into your lap.”

After Moustakas went over the railing, he disappeared for a moment. But then he popped up, showing he caught the ball. The crowd exploded. #Moosebumps! After the game, Moustakas spoke with reporters about the catch — and the fans.

“Those people in the dugout kept me from hitting the ground, and I don’t really know what happened after that,” he said. “I felt kind of like I got lifted up and was crowd surfing and then they just kind of tossed me off, back on the field, and told me to just go get ’em again, so it was pretty cool.”

Sports fans have compared Moustakas’ catch with one by Derek Jeter in the 2003 NLCS.

After the 2-1 win Tuesday night in Kansas City, Royals fans were ecstatic knowing the boys in blue are now just one win away from the World Series.

“This is incredible,” Pete Womack said. “We’ve been down here now four years from South Dakota. This is absolutely unbelievable, but I’ve been a Royals fan for 25 years. This is incredible. We get to the 6th inning, nobody’s stopping us. We got the best bullpen in the MLB. It’s unbelievable.”

Others shared Womack’s enthusiasm.

“It’s just amazing,” Greg Ruark said. “We just keep winning. I can’t believe it. Go Royals, baby! Love it! I remember seeing the series, 6-years-old. It’s just wonderful. Yeah! Kansas City Royals!”

Another fan, while enthusiastic about the Royals’ success, also shared an equal amount of enthusiasm for the team’s first baseman.

“It was awesome, best thing ever. We’re gonna win the championship. Also, Eric Hosmer, marry me, please. I’m serious.”

Game 4 of the ALCS begins at 3 p.m. on Wednesday and will air on TBS.
