More charges filed against La Cygne, Kansas teacher accused of sexual relations with student

LA CYGNE, Kan. — A 31-year old high school teacher in La Cygne, Kansas now faces 20 charges for unlawful sexual relations with at least one student.

Linn County District Court documents list 20 charges filed against Keaton Krell, a Prairie View High School language arts teacher, for alleged incidents that happened January 5, 2014 and January 10, 2016.

The specific charge against him alleges he violated Kansas Statute 21.5512.a9. It is described as such:

“The offender is a teacher or other person in a position of authority and the person with whom the offender is engaging in consensual sexual intercourse, lewd fondling or touching, or sodomy is a person 16 years of age or older who is a student enrolled at the school where the offender is employed. If the offender is the parent of the student, the provisions of subsection (b) of K.S.A. 2014 Supp. 21-5604, and amendments thereto, shall apply, not this subsection.”

Krell was arrested on May 19 at the high school over accusations that he had unlawful sexual relations with a student. The charges

According to the school superintendent, Krell resigned on May 9 for the next school year was not related to his arrest.

“I don’t know where it will end up, but we’re going to run it into the ground,” Paul Filla, Linn County Sheriff said.

The teacher had worked for Prairie View Unified School District since 2011. Some said he was respected for his strong teaching.

“When they came in and the school district notified us, it was a bombshell. Completely surprised,” said Chris Kleidosty, Prairie View Schools superintendent.

La Cygne is an hour directly south of Kansas City.
