KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Thousands of people experienced power outages on New Year’s Day as a major winter storm hit the metro.

UPDATE: As of 6:40 p.m., Evergy’s outage map showed just over 1,640 people are affected by outages, which are scattered across the area.

The largest outage is happening near Sedalia. Reports in the area indicate large amounts of ice.

EARLIER: At about 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, Evergy’s outage map showed over 11,000 people were affected by the outages, which were scattered across the area.

The most severe outages happened just south of Overland Park and east around Sweet Springs, Missouri. These areas have and continue to experience more ice compared to snow in other spots.

A strong winter storm rolled into the metro shortly after midnight, bringing freezing rain, sleet and snow. FOX4 is tracking the storm.
