KANSAS CITY, Kan. — People in one flooded metro neighborhood decided to skip a trip to the lake to kick off Memorial Day weekend.
All they needed to do was step outside their front doors. The water was so high near 12th and Miami in KCK that neighbors pulled out kayaks to get around. The water has since receded.
Crews who responded to the mess told FOX 4 there was a blockage of some sort that was causing the water to not drain in the area.
They say between that and the creeks being so high, a small lake was created at the intersection.
A dozens kids hit the water for a little fun, and one mother and two children even went kayaking through the stream.
FOX 4 talked to a woman who stopped to watch the fun.
“I was just like, wow, I didn’t think it was that deep, but once I saw them going through, it was like the way up to their knees,” said Kassandra Yanez.
And just next to the intersection a Mexican restaurant was also flooded. FOX 4 is told that there were several inches of water covering the entire floor.
Even with these high waters, cars weren’t stopping, a news crew witnessing many driving right through the flooded area. As flooding concerns continue on Friday night, the old adage rings true: “Turn around, don’t down.”
