KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Construction is set to begin on the first new market-rate apartment complex in Wyandotte County in 25 years.

According to the Kansas City Star, the $25 million, 228-unit development near 130th and State Avenue is intended to serve the growing number of employees in the Village West area a few miles to the east, which includes the Kansas Speedway, Livestrong Stadium and the recently-opened Hollywood Casino.

In addition, Cerner Corp. plans on creating over 4,000 jobs at an office complex planned at Village West.

The last market-rate apartment development in Wyandotte County was the 320-unit Madison at Wood View near I-35 and the 18th Street Expressway, which opened in 1986.

According to the Star, the new apartment complex will have a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom units with rents ranging from $750 to $1,250 a month, with the size of the apartments ranging from 725 square feet to 1,250 square feet.

The complex is set to open in 2013.
