KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The number of lives lost to drowning in Missouri are higher this year when compared to last year.

The Missouri Highway Patrol said the number of drownings in the Show Me State are at 24, compared to only 20 for all of last year.

The MHP said many of the deaths could be avoided by just making better decisions when around bodies of water.

They stressed wearing a life vest is the best way to stay alive when swimming in a river or lake.
