KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If trimming your waistline was part of your New Year’s resolution, then typing in 140 characters or less could help you shed pounds, at least according to a study from the University of South Carolina.

The study stated people had a better success when they used the site to receive and share information.

If you’re still not convinced, Mashable reported one of every 10 posts by the test group correlated to about .5 percent of weight loss.

The study lasted over a six month period with 96 test patients, identified as overweight and obese men and women. Everyone was assigned to one of two groups: one that only listened to weight-loss podcasts and another that included podcasts and mobile phone use.

Seventy-five percent of the posts were informational, with most characterized as teaching — providing new facts or skills, the study said.

One of the most frequent types of teaching posts was a status update from a participant, 81 percent of all of them in fact, such as “I avoided eating a pastry this morning at a breakfast meeting! I did have a skim Mocha without whipped cream… not too bad,” the report said.

“Providing group support through online social networks can be a low cost way to reach a large number of people who are interested in achieving a healthy weight,” said Brie Turner-McGrievy, a researcher at the school.
