ROTTERDAM, Netherlands — Mario is a 54-year-old volunteer who helped clean pens at the Blijdorp Zoo and his life is coming to a somber end. He’s been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and Dutch News reports that a charity helped him fulfill a final wish.
Mario constantly fought learning difficulties and because he worked at the zoo for most of his adult life, he wanted the opportunity to say goodbye to the animals. Thanks to a charity called Ambulance Wish Foundation, his wish was granted.
While visiting the giraffes, one came up to Mario and appeared to give him a ‘kiss’ goodbye. The foundation’s director said it was a magical moment to witness.
“You saw him smile, it was special that the animals knew him and could sense all was not well with him,” Kees Veldboer said.
