KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One man suffered critical injuries Friday night after getting shot by police in the River Market. No officers were injured in the incident in the 400 block of Grand Avenue. Police were called to the scene at about 10:15 p.m.

“When the officers arrived, they saw the suspect. He was standing in the middle of River Market and as they approached him, he pulls out a sharp object and actually charges towards them,” KCPD spokesman Darin Snapp said.

FOX 4’s Katie Banks reports the initial emergency call was for a domestic situation, and things escalated when the man wasn’t cooperative with officers’ commands.

Eyewitness Perry Jordan was driving in the area with a friend when the shooting happened, and told FOX 4 what he saw.

“The officer has somebody held at gunpoint, giving him commands, and you can kind of hear there’s an argument going on between them, and it looks like maybe he might have moved or did something wrong and the officer shot him. He was definitely at fault and not complying with orders,” Jordan said.

“He had his hands out to the side, kind of like a ‘come at me,’ trying to be aggressive toward the officer and you could tell he was still kind of moving toward the officer. I don’t feel the police were out of line at all, by any means. I mean, they gave more than enough time to give commands before… it wasn’t just a quick just draw and shoot. I feel the officers definitely acted in reason.”

The area was clear of vendors at the time of the shooting, and there wasn’t much foot traffic according to police. FOX 4 will bring you the latest on this story on Saturday during FOX 4 Morning News.
