OLATHE, Kan. — A husband and wife are charged with selling drugs near an Olathe elementary school. Officers arrested Daral and Amanda Cain at their home Wednesday afternoon.
If you have children at Fairview Elementary School there is no need for alarm. Police say there is no evidence that the couple was selling drugs to children or enticing them in any way. In fact, neighbors say their children went to the elementary school.
The reason the Cains are in trouble for selling drugs near a school is that they live just a few houses down the street, less than 1,000 feet away.
They each posted $25,000 bonds and are now back out on the streets. It was out of a duplex where police say the Cains ran their drug operation, a criminal complaint stating that they distributed marijuana and THC near the school. In addition to the distribution counts, both are also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and four counts of endangering a child.
Neighbors say three to four children live in the duplex with them, and that is where the child endangerment charge comes from. Prosecutors say the drug activity in the Cains home put their childrens’ live in danger.
People who live in their neighborhood are not surprised, and say it is about time that police intervened.
“They used to just line up out there, but not lately, I don’t know what he does now. He may meet them at the parking lot or something,” said Harold Suddarth.
“I knew they had kids because he walks the kids to school, and home from school. Every day he meets them at school. So I just thought, why don’t you have a job? But he seemed to care about the kids,” said Judi Loyd.
FOX 4’s Shannon O’Brien knocked on the Cains’ door to get their side of this story. A man who said he is Amanda`s brother came to the door and said that they were in Gardner.
Both suspects were in court for their first appearances on Thursday, and have court dates scheduled for May 5.
