OLATHE, Kan. — Olathe East High School was placed under lockdown Friday morning because of a shooting inside the building.
Olathe Police responded to the school and said no students were injured in the shooting. Officers also determined there is no longer an active threat at the high school.
The district said families would have already been notified if their loved one was injured.
The district is asking parents and guardians to stay away from the school to allow emergency crews to access the scene and said the school and surrounding buildings have been secured.
The Olathe School District said parents who normally pick up their students need to pick them up at California Trail Middle School at 13775 W. 133rd St. Students who walk home from school will also be bussed to that school.
Students who ride the bus home from school will be bused home from Pioneer Trail Middle School.
The district said student drivers will be released in a staggered order and escorted to their cars.
Students who ride special education buses will ride home from Olathe East like normal.
Administrators and law enforcement will facilitate reunification as quickly as possible, according to the district.
An Olathe Board of Education Member tweeted that because of what happened, there may be some delays with bus transportation Friday afternoon. Julie Steele suggested parents may want to consider pick-up options instead.
Counseling services for students and staff will be available at California Trail Middle School and Pioneer Trail Middle School until 7 p.m. Friday evening.
Every family with a student at the high school also received a letter from Superintendent Dr. Brent Yeager.
“I want to make you aware of a situation that is currently happening. Olathe East is currently under lock down due to an active shooting situation on campus. Please know that law enforcement is on site and the building is secured. Olathe East and surrounding school buildings have been secured. We are working on reunification plans,” Yeager said in the letter.
