GARDNER, Kan. – A pilot is in the hospital and lucky to be alive, after his small plane took a nosedive at the Gardner Municipal Airport.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Edward VanMorlan, 69, of Olathe, took off from the airport in Gardner Monday morning. When he made a banking right turn, his engine cut off and took a nosedive 300 feet into the ground.
Amazingly, after striking the ground nose first, the plane came to rest on its wheels.
On Monday afternoon VanMorlan was reportedly recovering at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. His condition is unknown.
