KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police are investigating after one person was shot and killed at a Wendy's in Kansas City.

KC police said the shooting happened at the location at 31st and Main Street just before 7 p.m.

Police are looking for a Wendy’s employee who fled the restaurant where he was working after the victim was killed outside.

The victim initially had life-threatening injuries but later died. He's been identified as a 23-year-old Aaron G. Mason.

Investigators believe a shootout occurred behind the counter and in the drive-thru area.

Police say at least a dozen people were inside when it happened. Those customers and employees were held in a bus nearby after the shooting as police talked to them about the frightening ordeal.

The incident started with what police are calling an armed disturbance. They aren’t sure if it was a robbery or just an argument between an employee and customer.

At one point it appears the customer jumped the counter and shots were fired in the cooking area of the Wendy’s.

From that point, both men went out the back door of the restaurant into the drive-thru area and the shooting continued. Police said they’ve recovered multiple shell casings to indicate both men were shooting.

The customer was found in bad shape in the back parking lot. The employee took off in what police described as a wild dinner scene.

Wendy's said in a statement, "Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our customers and team members. We are deeply saddened by this tragic act of violence and our thoughts are with the victim and their family. We are still learning the details of this situation and will continue to cooperate with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
