KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Kansas City, Kansas school district said it has suspended its contract with a temporary worker service that provided an employee suspected of being the person who fired a gun near a school playground. Police continue to search for that suspect.

KCK Police said around 10:11 a.m., shots were fired near Mark Twain Elementary School.

Police said that worker was a contractor doing work with district maintenance employees.

FOX 4 crews had several parents stop and ask what was going on at the school. One parent said she found out about the dangerous situation through Facebook. She hadn’t heard anything from the school.

“I didn’t want to look at Facebook and learn that there’s a shooting around here,” Trisha Campos said. “I just ask that at least text messages or at least something go immediately to parents.”

The school district did not reply to an email sent by FOX 4 about how the notification process works, or what, if anything, was done to notify parents of the emergency situation.

A district representative did tell one FOX 4 reporter that a text message was sent out to parents who had signed up for those alerts, but several parents said they have signed up for that service and received no notification.
