Woman hit and killed trying to cross I-70 in Independence

INDEPENDENCE, Mo — A woman was killed after she was hit by a truck trying to cross I-70 early in the morning on Aug. 31.

Police were called just before 2:30 a.m. to investigate reports of a pedestrian that was struck just east of Noland Road, according to a statement from the Independence police.

The woman, Shirlessa Sanders, 31, of Topeka, was outside of her vehicle. She had parked on the shoulder and was trying to cross the interstate.   A Toyota Tacoma driving in the eastbound lanes hit her.

Police say the woman was killed instantly.  The driver of the truck remained at the scene and was not injured.

The crash is still under investigation.
