KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A pedestrian suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car on 71 Highway Monday night.

Kansas City police said that a person was struck by a Chevy Blazer in the northbound lanes of the highway near 59th Street around 7:30 p.m.

The driver told police he saw the pedestrian, who was crossing the highway, in the middle of his lane at the last minute. He said he couldn’t swerve to the right without hitting other vehicles and couldn’t swerve left because the pedestrian was continuing to cross the highway in that direction.

The front right side of the Blazer hit the pedestrian. That person was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said the driver stopped just north of the area where the collision happened and was not injured.

The northbound lanes of 71 Highway were closed in the area for several hours. As of about 9:30 p.m., lanes were reopened.
