KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man was killed after apparently being crushed under an garbage truck in the Northland on Tuesday morning.

According to authorities, the accident happened in the Staley Meadows subdivision near NE 107th Street and NE Flora in Kansas City, Missouri.

The owner of Jim’s Disposal Service says the victim, Brandon Ford, was part of a three person crew that had worked together for almost a year. They were on the same route that they run every week. Investigators say that the truck accidentally backed over the man after he lost his grip on the back of the truck.

A neighbor told FOX 4 he heard a man yell and saw the driver jump out of the truck. He ran to help, but it was too late.

“It was a  three person crew, one of the members of the crew was hanging onto the back of the truck as it was backing; he apparently lost his grip, fell and unfortunately was run over by the truck and died at the scene,” said Sgt. Bill Mahoney with KCPD.

Police say the victim was on the driver’s side of the truck but the driver couldn’t see him. Officers say the other man hanging on the back of the truck was on the passenger side.

The owner of Jim’s Disposal Service says the victim’s brother also works for the company. He says the driver is devastated about the accident.

“We’re not seeing any obvious negligence on the part of the driver,” he said.

Chuck Byrd, who owns Jim’s Disposal Service released this statement.  It reads, “Chuck Byrd and the Jim’s Disposal family would like to express our deepest sympathy to the Ford family. This morning’s events are an unthinkable tragedy. Our prayers and support are with the Ford family as they grieve the loss of this outstanding young man, Brandon Ford.”
